Spoke 8 is dedicated to innovation in the field of neuroscience, with a particular focus on neurodegenerative diseases. The primary objective is to coordinate the critical mass of neuroscientists present in Tuscany, integrating interdisciplinary skills ranging from chemistry to computational sciences, from synthetic biology to bioinformatics, and from omics sciences to imaging. This multidisciplinary approach allows the development of new therapeutic and diagnostic opportunities using innovative technologies.

The activities of Spoke 8 include the generation of preclinical models at both cellular and animal levels, the creation of neuroprosthetics for visual and motor functional recovery, and the development of pharmacological and genetic therapies. Special attention is given to enhancing neuroplasticity, a crucial factor for functional recovery from neurological conditions.
Additionally, Spoke 8 utilizes computational techniques and artificial intelligence for drug design and the identification of quantitative biomarkers predictive of neurodegeneration. Through advanced tools such as functional imaging, the program facilitates the analysis and manipulation of neuronal function, improving the understanding of the relationships between behavior and brain functions.
This integrated and innovative approach aims to develop cutting-edge therapeutic and diagnostic solutions, with a significant impact on the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.
