Health challenges on Elba Island: innovation, prevention, and telemedicine at the heart of the THE project

Elba Island becomes a laboratory for innovation in Tuscan healthcare: the conference, promoted as part of the THE – Tuscany Health Ecosystem project, presents experiences and results on prevention, telemedicine, and new models of care in island territories.

The Island of Elba confirms its role as a laboratory of innovation for Tuscan healthcare, with a particular focus on the integration of local services, prevention, and new forms of remote assistance. These will be the topics at the center of the conference “Health challenges on the Island of Elba: prospects and initial results of the THE project,” scheduled for Saturday, October 25, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. at the Hotel Airone in Portoferraio (LI).

The initiative is part of the THE – Tuscany Health Ecosystem Project, funded by the PNRR – Ecosistemi dell’Innovazione (Innovation Ecosystems) and developed jointly by the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna and the ASL Toscana Nord Ovest, in collaboration with the Fondazione Elba. The goal is to promote a discussion among institutions, healthcare professionals, researchers, and local representatives on how technological innovation and new prevention models can tangibly improve the health of island communities and inland areas.

After institutional greetings from Maria Letizia Casani, Tiziano Nocentini, Fabio Chetoni, and Patrizia Lupi, the day will open with a session dedicated to the role of inland areas as laboratories of innovation. Speakers will include Sabina Nuti, Andrea Lenzini, Guido Vagheggini, Paolo Marzorati, Alberto Giannoni, and Filippo Quattrone, who will explore the theme of service integration and citizen participation as levers for a more efficient healthcare system that is closer to local needs.

This will be followed by two sessions dedicated to prevention, with a focus on young people and the adult population. Nicola Spezia will present the results of the Youth Observatory, while Alberto Giannoni will illustrate a project for the prevention of sudden cardiac death in schools. Vera Benedetto and Carmine Di Muro will recount their experiences of local cancer multi-screening and initiatives to promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles.

The fourth session will focus on telemedicine and technological innovation for the management of chronic conditions, with presentations by Alessandro Iala, Luca Valcarenghi, and Alberto Giannoni, who will present the digital models tested on Elba to ensure continuity of care for chronic patients.

The proceedings will conclude with a round table discussion entitled “Barriers, actions, and proposals for a shared health strategy on the Island of Elba,” which will see the participation of regional and local institutional representatives and the Elban third sector in an open discussion on the future prospects for the health of the population.
