4th Meeting on the Tuscan Ecosystem for Innovation, Spoke 1

SPOKE 1: ADVANCED RADIOTHERAPIES AND DIAGNOSTIC IN ONCOLOGY

December 12, 2024, 9:00 AM–7:00 PM
CNR – Pisa Research Area
Room 27 (Ground floor, Auditorium entrance)
Via G. Moruzzi 1, Pisa

Oncological diseases represent one of the main challenges for public healthcare. Scientific and technological innovation is crucial to addressing this emergency, improving the effectiveness of therapies and reducing side effects. Radiotherapy is a cornerstone in the treatment of many cancers, involving more than half of cancer patients. However, current research highlights the need to go beyond traditional approaches, exploring new methods of radiation delivery to optimize clinical outcomes.

Among emerging techniques, the “FLASH” effect stands out for its ability to reduce damage to healthy tissues through the ultra-rapid delivery of high doses of radiation, while maintaining the same therapeutic effectiveness against cancer cells as conventional delivery methods. This represents a significant step forward in advanced therapies, opening the possibility of treating more resistant tumor forms and significantly reducing overall treatment times, with added benefits for the sustainability of healthcare systems.

One year after our last meeting, the 2024 Spoke 1 event offers an opportunity to reflect on the progress made and share the results of research activities, ranging from the use of innovative technologies in radiotherapy to the application of new radiopharmaceuticals and radiotracers for more precise and targeted diagnostics. Advances in the field of oncological therapies have involved a wide network of multidisciplinary expertise, including physicists, biologists, engineers, and clinicians, all working together toward a common goal.

The meeting will also serve as a platform to discuss future perspectives and new projects within Spoke 1, which aims to continue integrating the best innovations in radiotherapy and oncological diagnostics. Spoke 1, part of the broader Tuscany Health Ecosystem (THE) project, seeks to establish Tuscany as a reference point for research and applications in the life sciences, fostering synergies between scientific research and clinical applications.
